Cold weather and freezing temperatures are upon us.
Here are a few handy tips to save time, costly repairs and water damage.
*Make sure all pipes are wrapped with insulating material. If you do not have commercial insulation you can use plastic, newspaper or blankets. Don’t forget pipes under sinks, in crawl spaces, near windows or basements and unheated areas.
*Remember to disconnect water hoses from outside faucets.
*Locate and know where your shut- off valves are. In the event of broken pipes, shut off water to pipes immediately.
*If for some reason you have to remove the lid from your water meter, make sure that the lid is replaced on the meter box. Cold air and wind chill factors can freeze and bust a meter in a very short time.
*If you have had problems with frozen pipes in the past, try running a small stream from a cold water faucet. A stream producing enough water to fill a 12 ounce glass per minute would equal to 105 gallons a day. The cost is small compared to frozen or busted pipes.
